What’s the Difference Between an Electrical Contractor and an Electrician?

Wednesday, 1 April 2015 3:14:00 pm Australia/Sydney

Electrical contractors specialise in the design, installation and repair of electrical systems, according to Backwoods Builders.

While the term is often used interchangeably with electrician, they are not exactly the same. An electrical contractor operates an electrical business, either solely as an electrician or while employing electricians. Electricians are qualified to carry out electrical work.

Electrical contractors need to be registered and their work is regulated by law.

Some electrical contractors focus on domestic work, installing lighting and audio systems and helping with smoke alarms and rewiring work. Other electrical contractors focus on the commercial sector. They work with companies to set up and maintain electrical and communication systems that are critical to the workplace. Some are trained to work with heavy machinery and install electrical systems in factories, processing plants and other complex commercial environments.

Customers should ensure they check the work history of their electrical contractor to ensure they are right for the job at hand.
